Equine Myo-manipulative Functional Therapy

Equine Myo-manipulative Functional Therapy is a hands-on massage therapy that includes many techniques to restore proper movement and function to the horse’s body. Horses have approximately 205 bones and 700 muscles. The muscles control the movement of the joints, and if the muscles are tight, the joints cannot move optimally.

The Fascia tissue connects all the horse’s body parts, including bones, muscles, organs, and all the systems in the body. Optimally Fascia should be loose, lubricated, and glide freely. When damaged, the Fascia tightens and loses its fluidity, which inhibits movement and can cause restrictions and pain in areas far from injury. It can also stick to the underlying tissues through scar tissue (adhesions), reducing the range of motion and muscle development.

Massage and MFR (Myo-Fascia Release) speed up healing, promote optimal athleticism, decrease the chance of injury, and help keep your horse balanced, supple, and comfortable. Massage also stimulates circulation, which mobilizes nutrients into the muscles and removes waste products. In addition, massage decreases heart rate and reduces stress hormones, which makes for a happy horse!

Equine Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a safe and gentle form of bodywork that affects the central nervous system, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), and the connective tissue called “fascia.”

The Equine Nervous System is the most complex system in the body. The Central Nervous System (CNS) controls every aspect of the horse’s body.  It consists of the brain, cranial nerves, spinal cord, and all the nerves that run off the spinal cord into the body.

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) is a blood derivative that circulates through the body, which brings nutrients to the brain and provides it and the central nervous system with cushioning and removing toxins. When there are blockages or tension, this circulation slows down, and problems arise. The delivery is found in the Craniosacral rhythm (CSR) result of the production and re-absorption of the CSF.

The fascia is an independent, self-intelligent, and self-organizing network of extremely strong tissue that connects all the horse’s body parts and systems and surrounds every muscle, tendon, and ligament, holding them to the bone. While giving the body its structure and organization, it also is like the body’s internet that communicates with all parts. The strain on the fascia affects muscle development, lymphatic function, digestion, meridians, internal organs, and the nervous system.

Craniosacral Therapy affects the bone, fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments, arteries, veins, nerves, blood, lymph, and cerebral spinal fluid. CST helps the cerebral spinal fluid flow at a normal rate which allows the entire craniosacral system to regulate itself, thereby promoting healing in all areas of the body, both physical and emotional. Cranial Sacral Therapy can have a deep calming and re-balancing on the state of the nervous system.

Depending on the horse, a CST session can last 60-90 minutes. The therapist places a light touch on specific areas of the body to promote cerebral spinal fluid flow. A release happens when the soft tissue relaxes, and that area becomes more balanced; proper vascular, nerve, and energy flow occur.
